Related article here. I use both Facebook and Instagram with the awareness that my data is being mined in probably unimaginable ways, but asking for driver's licenses (or birth certificates!) is a bridge too far. Especially for people who use a pen name or stage name for professional reasons, or reasons of personal security.

As it happens, I once wrote a popular financial column for a major publication, and for more than 30 years I have written my political views under this pen name so not to embarrass my employer. Does free speech not apply to people like me?
On another subject, this is the best political satire out there. You know it and I know it, so why the hell don’t more of you speak up? Sheesh!

Every time I start to break down and consider getting a Facebook account so I can access information on events and places, something like this comes along.
A friend of ours set up a Facebook account for my wife so she could use it for business networking. Most of this supposed business networking seems to be people saying things like “I had a sandwich for lunch” or “LOL.” This friend then said she could set me up a Facebook page “So people can find you.” I told here that is the LAST thing in the world I want.

Just last week I set up a FB account. They let me start using it and then locked me out, demanding a phone number of driver’s licence. Since that’s never going to happen, it’s bye bye FB for me. But what about people who’ve been using it for years, for whom it’s an important contact? They have to decide whether to give it up or give in to extortion. The FB team need to be given a good kicking – it might change their attitude.

Why? Why use Facebook? Why not quit? How bad does it have to get? Will it have to start demanding human sacrifices or something? Why is this bullshit so compelling?

Speaking for myself, I find Facebook necessary for professional reasons (such as pointing readers to websites that publish my comics). Also, many social activities seem to be organized through Facebook. But I probably divulge less about my day-to-day life than many people. In particular, I avoid “checking in” to various locations. That sort of thing creeps me out.
Roger – Thanks for the kind words above. I will be switching over to a new website soon, and hope to make more time to engage with readers on the blog.
