Note to Leon Panetta: Since you are first American to make a military career jump from First Lieutenant to Secretary of Defense, perhaps you need to be informed that America’s current military foes do not actually run the governments of Iraq and Afghanistan, so they are not likely to stand on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise in top hats and tails and hand over their swords. They are not going to surrender for the simple reason that they are not fighting a war. They are part of a world-wide revolution against the very sort of domination that you are attempting to impose, and your drone air strikes on unarmed civilians in those two countries constitute the greatest incitement to revolution the world has ever known.

The circle of stupidity applies to lots of other problems now facing dotty old Uncle Sam. To name just one: If you call bombing civilians in a vast area of the world controlled by tribal chieftains a “war,” it can only creates more enemies — whole cities of them — so naturally, the best thing to do is start more “wars.”
